Warm congratulations to Hindu Maha Sabha on its 100th anniversary (27 February 2025). Since 1925 the Sabha has promoted Hindu traditions, education — including HMS College in Port Louis — and ancestral languages such as Hindi and Sanskrit, fostering tolerance and unity in Mauritius. The commemorative centennial magazine will inspire future generations.
Heartfelt congratulations on the centennial. Inspired by social reform and India’s independence movement, HMS has taught the Ramayana and Bhagavad Gita and, since 1925, stewarded the Maha Shivratri pilgrimage to Ganga Talao. Advocacy by Teelucksingh Rajcoomar Gujadhur and Dhunputh Lallah helped make the pilgrimage a public holiday in 1931; HMS has managed the site since 1938. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam’s 1965 suggestion led to the Shiv Mandir funded by Mrs K. Boodhun — today’s Kashi Vishwanath Mandir. In 2005 the Prime Minister brought Gangotri water to pour into the lake. Best wishes for the next hundred years.
At the office of Baboo Teelucksing, devotees founded Hindu Maha Sabha for the management of Baboo Fakeerahsing Hospice. Teelucksing donated a building (about Rs 15,500) plus funds for a public library — some Rs 25,000 in all. Notary Seessarun explained the rules in Hindi: the public building should be free of caste and creed. The name Hindu Maha Sabha was retained. Meeting ended at 3.00 p.m.
